NAM CINEMAgalalli ond dina...

'Tyaagada swaarthi naaniga' ! WOW! One of Hamsalekha's most interesting lines..call it poetry or chitra saahitya or whatever, these lines from a song in the film NENAPIRALI
Hey Beladingale...himbaalisadiru... preetiya payanake ottaayisadiru...
the song goes on and there is a line in English which goes 'hey hey hey....you fraud!'. To some , it might sound strange that amidst such interesting and meaningful Kannada lines in the song, suddenly this ENGLISH STATEMENT pops up. But to me that wasn't English. It was Kannada.
The ease with which we have made English and ever other language our own and have conveyed strong emotions through the use of the language is very evident here... Another fine example of this form is another Hamsalekha song '123 ..123..' from Shanti Kranthi...
Nenapirali, its music and its writing was in many ways signalling the arrival of a new breed of Kannada cinema to follow. Then came Mungaaru Male and then Duniya and nowadays in almost every other Kannada film you find wonderful music and wonderful lyric. Its wonderful that writers of the calibre of Jayanth Kaikani have begun contributing immensely to the 'writing' scenario. What happens is.. when writing comes along with strong 'concept', the way the songs are shot changes too and that is probably why see some pleasant cinematography in recent times. A fine example of this would be the 'ee sanje yaakaagide'song from GELEYA. Beautifully conceptualised and beautifully shot!
Here is a list of ma fav cinema , directors... .
As films, in Kannada , I loved would be ...( in order) OM, DUNIYA, Accident( the old one) , Ondanondu kaaladalli, Gowri Ganesha , A, UPENDRA, Sshh, Ganeshana Maduve, Minchina Ota( again the old one), Nenapirali (also because I dubbed for PREM) , Tabarana kathe, Shaapa

As filmmakers I think it would be... ( in order) Upendra, Shankar Nag, Yogaraj Bhat, Phani Ramachandra, Suri and to an extent Girish Kasaravalli.....

No Puttanna? None of his movies? Though ur list has movies/directors(of recent times) who kinda think out of the box, I still believe for his time, Puttanna was definitely a story teller who always chose good subjects (relavent) and presented them in the most effective way. Nagarahaavu wud find a place in my list of all time favs, irrespective of language.

No Puttanna not because I don't like his films but this is a list that immediately comes to my mind. Of all Puttanna's films , I liked Naagarahaavu the best. I hated Sharapanjara...(the songs were great..the uttara dhruvadim makes me feel so nostalgic and like a kid listening to a radio)...Otherwise Puttanna's sense of imagery was great. But to me, he has not inspired me too much. That is why not on the list.
Puttanna's 'edakallu...' and 'ranganaayaki' too were great films actually...!

Hi Arvind, Just out of curiosity I am asking this question. What are your views on the movie Mungaaru maLe?. What are the aspects that touched you in the movie.. I am asking these questions because..

Mungaaru maLe is the biggest blockbuster seen in the history of Sandalwood. It's not only the box office record that has made Mungaaru maLe the biggest talking point in Sandalwood.. It's because of the fact it made our own very kannadigas who were unwilling to accept kannada cinema to watch the movie in awe & also the non kannadigas.. As a matter of fact, this movie changed the whole attitude of the outside world towards kannada movies.. This is very evident from the reactions of the non kannadigas that I see in my office and other places.. Many of my non kannadiga colleagues had become addictive to Mungaaru maLe songs.. They used to say they have never heard such a melody before.. The impact of those songs are so huge that they have started accepting all good kannada songs there after..

FM radio channels like Radio City & Radio Mirchi etc., which were reluctant to play kannada songs have now miraculously turned to kannada music.. Curtosy Mungaaru maLe..

Also, Mungaaru maLe led to an explosion of young and dynamic youth aspiring to do something in kannada cinema like never before.. It's a landmark movie for many such reasons..

Even personally it's one of the best movies I have ever seen.. I saw this movie 10 times which again is a personal record.. I had seen JOGI movie 3 times earlier.. I had become so much addicted to Mungaaru maLe movie, it's music, ganesh's dialogues, it's climax that every weekend I had to watch it satisfy myself.. There were thousands like me who had become paranoid about the movie.. Such kind of an hysteria I had never seen for any kannada movie..

Keeping all the above points in the mind, I want to know your views about the movie since you are a filmmaker by character.. So, I would be too curious to know how you viewed this movie and how you view this Mungaaru maLe phenomena from the Sandalwood's growth point of view.. It's quite exhilerating for me if you can answer this since I am waiting for somebody like you and others to come up with a product like Mungaaru maLe so that we can experience that golden period once again..

Hi ranga...
mngaaru maleye enu ninna hanigala leele? I have wondered a thousand times..
I thank GOD and E.Krishnappa and ofcourse Bhattaru for that wonderful film called Mungaru male which came in at the right time and gave a fresh lease of life to the industry and the way it thinks. Till date, I feel filmmakers have not been able to come outta the shadow of that movie and its style.. Thanks to that film, today we have film makers thinking seriously abt packaging... in terms of music and cinematography et all...

Now abt ma personal view abt the film.. I was one of those guys who pulled ma 'kannada cinema hating' friends and made them watch the movie. I could proudly sit in the theatre hall and hold ma head high ! NO COMPROMISE ..IT WAS A GREAT BLOCKBUSTER ... !
Mungaru male was a very neat film, in my view where almost all departments of film making fell into the perfect groove of 'entertaining cinema'.
Mungaru male is nt a film I love, but a film that brings a smile on ma face... for so many reasons...!
For starters, Ganesh whom I knew as that boy who was talented and passionate abt acting made it to the big screen. To me and lot of other film aspirants.. he showed us that 'magaa...it is possible'.
And I was a fan of Bhattaru from MANI and always knew his exceptional writing abilities. Krishna too... as in... his cinematography skills were known to me way before the Male phenomenon... SUCH WONDERFUL CONTRIBUTIONS... GANESH, BHAT, KRISHNA. Manomurthy and Jayanth Kaikini spiced up the film and lo behold .. the package was there. Like I said before, I was happy because the package worked .
But the most entertaining part of the film to me was Ganesh's confident dialogue delivery skills ( only in that movie)..
Like I said before , I am thankful that a film like that happened to Kannada cinema but I think its time we looked beyond it . It should not end being the 1983 world cup win of the INDIAN TEAM !
It was a good film...not a great one. I remember telling ma friends that if every film is made atleast as neat as Mungaru was ...there will be a better time for KANNADA CINEMA. Abt it being such a huge hit.... m not sure it was only because of how wonderful the film was.
Mungaru should not end up being a sense of security for KANNADA CINEMA ...
The poetry in the film was out of the world..
'yaava hanigalinda..yava nelavu hasiraaguvudo...yaara sparshadinda..yaava manavu hasiyaaguvuddo...yaara usiral yaaraa hesaro......
mungaaru maleye...enu ninna hanigala leele

Wow.. arvind.. again I got goosebumps reading your reply about Mungaaru maLe..

Your first line in the reply itself is amazing as even I have thought about a million times .. 'Mungaaru maLeye Enu ninna hanigaLa leele..' ..

Your attitude is something awsome.. I am telling you this because many of our the so called directors of our sandalwood never take pride in our own industry's achievments.. When Jogi had become a BIG HIT, one director (who is basically a song lyricist & later turned music director and a director), had started his movie & the hair style of the hero in his movie resembled almost like JOGI.. When reports turned his attention towards this, he replied saying 'naanu jogi nOde illa..' .. How pathetic.. And, also there were many directors who invariably couldn't muster up Mungaaru maLe's success, tried to lament the movie by having some dialogues against Mungaaru maLe in their movies ..

With such directors around, people like you come like a breeze of fresh air.. Hats off.. How true when you said you pulled out 'kannada cinema hating' friends to MM and was proud!! I don't know for how many of my friends (Kannadigas hating kannada movies) and non kannadigas I have referred this movie & felt like a warriror!!

You are dead right when you said 'Mungaru should not end up being a sense of security for KANNADA CINEMA ... ' .. That is exactly the reason why even today we, the passionate kannada movie watchers, are desperately on the look out for a movie which is remotely as close as Mungaaru maLe, though everybody on earth including Yograj Bhat knows that a movie like Mungaaru maLe can never be remade again..

In the coming days, we pin our hopes on your movie Namarealondina and other movies by newcomers like Psycho etc., to come out of the shadows of Mungaaru maLe and Duniya..

As somebody said in the other article, I am becoming compltely addicted to your blogs & I am dreading the period when you become busy and I don't get to see your blog updated as frequently as you are doing it now :-( ..

All the best to you..
